In my opinion the two best and most interesting books about the Panamints are:

Silver Stampede by Neill C. Wilson

I feel a deep resentment toward the writers of revisionist histories. Some historians living long past the era when they might have had face to face interviews with the folks about whom they are writing, and only having access to previously read documents somehow seem able to come up with startling revelations, startling enough to maybe sell their book. Mr. Wilson wrote his book based on his interviews with the actual inhabitants of Panamint City and first hand access to the documents connected to the boom and bust town. Very well done, in my opinion.

These Canyons Are Full of Ghosts: The Last of the Death Valley Prospectors by Emmet Harder

For sale at the Shoshone Museum among other places

Emmet Harder WAS the last of the prospectors in the Panamints before it was closed off as wilderness. He was also one of the most successful at finding new sources of ore. He is also a gifted writer and tells one heck of a story, a true adventure.

The book's one shortcoming in my opinion is that he ran out of story about two chapters before an editor or a publisher thought it should end. His additional chapters don't add to the book's quality. However, it is a very good book indeed. And, you don't need to read what comes after the story is told.
